POSTER ART CONTEST : Open to grades 7-9
Poster Art Theme :   "An Alien Garden" what kind of things or plants would you find in an alien garden? Use your imagination!

SHORT STORY CONTEST : Open to all youth from grades 6-12, any topic or theme.   To enter short story contest, download entry form here.

Compliments Jamaica National Building Society, 3M Canada, Kisko Freezies. First Place story eligible for publication in the annual IMAGINE Anthology.

Winning entries eligible for posting on the VoSNL Website. Excerpts of winning entries to be published in a local newspaper.

DEADLINE: April 28 2008

RULES

  1. Story must be original and unpublished (Note: "Unpublished work" is defined as stories by an author who, prior to entering this contest, has never received money for a published piece of fiction writing.)
  2. Story features a protagonist (main character/s) who is a visible minority or is ethnic.
  3. Story must be between 1800 words.
    • Typed -- double spaced on one side of the paper. Hand written entries should be legible.
    • Paper -- white, 8.5 by 11.
    • Title Page -- must include your name, address, phone number, grade, school, story title, and length. Add e-mail address if available
    • Clear Copies -- do not submit originals. Manuscripts will not be Returned!

Disqualification: A manuscript will be disqualified if in the judgment of the nominating committee the entry falls into any one or more of the following categories:

  • Manuscript fails to meet all of the contest submittal requirements
  • Story has been published and/or the author has received payment for the story or some other piece of fiction writing prior to the date of entry
  • Story is considered to be outside of the Science fiction/fantasy genre
  • Story contains sex for the purpose of arousal only
  • Story contains harsh or foul language
  • Story is in bad taste
  • Story contains negative portrayal of minorities.

JUDGING

A contest nominating committee will short list the best stories from all of the qualified entries. An independent panel of judges will determine the winners from the short-list.

Judge's decision is final.

Notification: The prize money will be awarded by VoSNL in accordance with the decision of the judges. Contest winners will be notified by e-mail and or telephone in May. Money prizes and other awards will be given at a Visions of Science/IMAGINE event, date and venue tba.
