YOUND ADULTS
1st prize of $200 goes to Jennifer Liu! Jennifer is a grade 9 student from the Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute. Her story "Eternal Wish" is about a young Asian girl who feels burdened by her immortality. Memorable characters and an interesting climax make for a great story!
2nd prize of $100 goes to Tory Hetherington! Tory is a grade 12 student of the Earl Haig Secondary School. Her story "Fragments" tells of a young black woman's return to her ruined home. Tory shows an impressive command of language, poignancy and maturity. We look forward to big things from her!
3rd prize of $50 goes to Karina Manapaya! Karina is a grade 9 student of the Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute. Her story "Déjà vu" is a humorous look at one teenage girl's experience with a bad day that keeps repeating itself.
KIDS
1st prize of $200 goes to Morgan Campbell!
Morgan is a grade 7 student of the Market Lane Middle School. She has an impressive imagination and a maturity beyond her years. Her story "My Journal" examines the mysteries of creation.
2nd prize of $100 goes to Sorina Chis
Sorina is a grade 6 student from Terraview- Willowfield Public School. "Red Hot Water" is about a young African scientist's quest to Mars to cure Bird Flu. Fun, creative and lots of positive messages, Red Hot Water is a favorite of the judges.
3rd prize of $50 goes to Matthew Svensson
Matthew is a grade 7 student from Gorden A. Brown Middle School. "Tale of the Albanoth" is an action packed adventure in a fantasy setting, as a young Jamaican man discovers his royal destiny.
HONORABLE MENTION
These are the writers who gave us great stories!Merve Kutuk, The Time Crosser - Kyle is hurt in an accident and wakes up in a future where mankind is battling the results of a destroyed environment. The futuristic scientists want Kyle to help them...by experimenting on his brain! Well written, creative and a cautionary tale about the value of the environment. Oakdale Park Middle School.
Kevin Park, The Well of Power - In this amazing fantasy, a troll hero must seek a mystical well that will increase his power and help him save his race from the orc menace. Terraview-Willowfield Public School.
Shivon Wint, Ryo's Revenge - A young Japanese boy battles against the aliens that made him an orphan, but he realizes that revenge has its own cost. Joseph Brant Senior Public School.
Brian Kilburn, Mageto- A sword wielding prince goes on a quest to seek his father and battle aliens in this action-packed adventure.
Special Mention:Jessica Lee Fountain - for creative adaptation of Dr. Martin Luthur King's "I have A Dream" speech.
Edna Bonsu - for her twist on the time travel angle, through a magic book that sends a reader to different destinations.
