Joint Inner City Satellite Camp Program
Starting in summer 2005, in collaboration with the University of Toronto Science Outreach Program, a member of Actua, VoSNL is providing interactive summer camp programming for African Canadian organizations conducting summer camps. This service is being provided for five organizations that would not have included science programming in their summer camp curriculum without the participation of VoSNL / U of T Science Outreach. The organizations are:
JCA summer camp Leaders of Tomorrow, Northwest Toronto
United Achievers camp, Brampton
It's in Me programs, Etobicoke
Camp Edify, Scarborough
Summer Reading Camp, Markham African Caribbean Association, Markham
Science Outreach is a not-for-profit program at the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto. The aim of the program is to get students aged 4-15 excited about science, engineering, technology, and mathematics. This goal is achieved through a variety of fun, hands-on, workshop and summer camp programs. Our knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff are undergraduate students in science or engineering at the University of Toronto, and reach over 20,000 young people every year. Founded in 1990, Science Outreach is a member of Actua and is proud to offer specialized programs for under-represented audiences.
Through collaboration between Science Outreach, as a member of Actua, and Visions of Science Network for Learning, we have launched a new inner-city satellite camp program this summer. This new satellite program will allow hundreds of students to experience high-quality, hands-on science outreach programming. Four Science Outreach instructors will travel around the city through the first two weeks of August, allowing Science Outreach to visit various recreational camps around the city.
Each of the approximately 500 students involved in this program will receive a 1-day science experience - i.e. a full day of programming. Each day will include 2-3 hands-on science projects from different disciplinary areas within science and engineering. The projects to be conducted are as follows:
Ages 4-8:
Chemical Magic
Digging for Fossils
Project: planets
Ages 9-12:
Wacky Drawing Machines
Indy 500, an automotive project
Bridge Design
